Update on river hazards upstream of Geelong Canoe Club

Published Thu 13 Nov 2025

Club members paddling above Queens Park Bridge may be aware of the fallen tree that nearly blocks the river.  The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority identified this as a tree owned by the City of Greater Geelong (COGG) and notified them.

This week, COGG sent a team up the river to remove it. They were able to cut some of it, but left a significant amount in and just under the surface of the water.  Be careful when crossing this section.

The second hazard that has caught some paddlers out is a snag 150 metres downstream from the overhead pipe. It sits above the surface when the river level is normal and below the water when the river is up. A buoy will be placed on the snag so you are aware of its location.
